||Wild-type Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 cells were grown at 30 °C in BG-11 media (Allen 1968) buffered with 35 mM HEPES at pH 7.8. Five hundred-milliliter volumes in 1-L flasks were bubbled with sterile-filtered air under continu- ous illumination of approximately 50 μEm−2 s−1 provided by fluorescent bulbs and grown to late log phase prior to harvesting and encapsulation. Control samples in liquid suspension (BG-11) and with 500 mM NaCl in BG-11 were prepared at identical OD730, stored in identical Petri dishes, and stored in similar fashion in the same incubator over 24 h at the same light intensity
